Ever wondered how a bag of coffee gets its price tag? At Glass Coffee, transparency is the cornerstone of our commitment to superior quality and ethical sourcing. Today we’re rolling out Transparent Pricing, live on every product page. Shown in Pounds Sterling (GBP), it breaks down three essential costs - green-bean price, per-kilogram transport fee, and lot size - so you can see exactly how your coffee’s price comes together.
How Price is Determined
Our Transparent Pricing graphic distills every coffee into three data points:
Green bean cost refers to the price paid per kilogram for raw coffee, and it reflects quality based on factors like SCA grading and the consistency of our trusted producers. Coffee quality can vary significantly - not just between farms, but even within a single farm, where multiple varietals and processing methods can result in a wide spectrum of cup profiles.
Transport cost is the per-kilogram fee incurred when transporting the beans to our roastery.
Lot size represents the total weight of coffee purchased; larger orders can potentially lower the per-kilogram cost, whereas rare, ultra-premium coffees are often available in smaller batches, such as 30kg, 12kg or even 5kg.
For now we surface only Material Costs - Green-Bean plus Transport - because they form the foundation of your coffee’s final price. We deliberately leave out roasting, rent, taxes, and labour so you can focus on what truly drives the number on the tag.
In short: price starts with one simple formula - green-bean cost + transport cost = material cost.
Why It Matters
Customer Trust
Transparent Pricing shines a light on the real costs behind each cup. Instead of hiding or inflating margins, we lay out every cost so you can trust our prices.
Social Sustainability
By openly sharing what we pay for green beans, we prove our commitment to fair treatment of farmers. Fair compensation not only helps farmers improve their communities but also paves the way for more sustainable farming methods.
Environmental Responsibility
Poverty is the biggest enemy of sustainability in specialty coffee. When farmers receive fair pay, they can invest in eco-friendly practices - ranging from reducing pesticide use to maintaining healthier soil and water ecosystems. Transparent pricing underscores the direct link between equitable payments and sustainable cultivation.
Don’t trust, verify (Roadmap 2.0)
Transparent Pricing 1.0 is just the first milestone in our roadmap. While it currently relies on our internal records and dedication to accuracy, we understand that genuine trust requires outside verification. That’s why Version 2.0 will integrate blockchain technology, creating a public ledger (document) so that every cost is both published and independently validated. We’re preparing to pilot this technology with one of our farmers as part of Version 2.0.
Final call
Many quality-focused roasters - ourselves included - often emphasise transparency as a core value of our trade. Yet, in practice, it’s rare to actually see the numbers laid out in the coffee industry. Transparent Pricing lets you trace a coffee’s price back to a single equation. Choose Glass Coffee and back a future built on clarity, accountability, and sustainability.
