Khongea Estate
About Khongea Estate
Khongea sits in Upper Assam on the south bank of the Brahmaputra, in one of the world’s great tea-growing regions. Established in the late nineteenth century and owned by the Prakash family since 1949, the estate has been shaped over decades into a benchmark for quality Assam. Today, under the stewardship of Sudhir Prakash and his family, Khongea combines hand-plucked leaf, modern factory standards and a long-term approach to both cultivation and community.
Assam is often known as the backbone of English Breakfast blends, but here it stands on its own. This is a rich, dark and full-bodied black tea with the depth and structure the region is celebrated for: robust, malty, smooth in texture, with notes of caramel and a light raisin finish. Khongea also publishes a strong commitment to worker welfare and sustainable estate management, including participation in the Ethical Tea Partnership, Rainforest Alliance certification, and a long-term replanting programme to maintain soil and bush health.
Why Khongea
At Glass, we chose Khongea because it represents Assam with more clarity and credibility than most teas sold under that name. It is a single-estate tea with real character, real provenance and a family behind it that has managed the garden for generations. The result is a cup with strength, depth and definition, grounded in place rather than anonymous blending.
